Sun-Sentinel Science Pages

The following are full broadsheet pages devoted to a topic of scientific interest published in each Sunday's South Florida's Sun-Sentinel newspaper. After I was an intern at the paper, I continued to design science pages as a free-lancer, delivering them electronically over the internet.

Big Telescopes
July 19, 1998

The newest world-class telescopes are bigger, lighter, and less expensive than ever before. The largest of these ground-based scopes are powerful enough to read newsprint from several states away.
This page discusses two types of telescope mirrors, how they're used to magnify starlight, and the kind of precision optics and mechanics needed to observe objects thousands of miles away.

Microsatellites
April 26,1998

The next generation of space satellite might be smaller than your fist. Scientists are shying away from large, multi-million dollar satellites that can break down in the harsh environment of space. Instead, they're turning to flocks of smaller, disposable satellites that can be launched in the hundreds and share the work that a big satellite would normally do.

Mars Pathfinder Landing
July 13,1997

This page ran shortly after NASA's Pathfinder spacecraft landed on Mars, delivering images of the landscape.
Readers had to turn their newspapers sideways to view the page; the 360-degree panorama captured by Pathfinder called for the unusual horizontal format.

Bionic Devices
September 28, 1997

An array of miniature devices are being implanted into humans to assist them with debilitating or life-threatening disease. This page looks at some present and future products.
An online, interactive version of this page was produced for the newspaper's website. The interactive shockwave graphic includes animations of the prosthetic devices and a "bionics quiz."
